Jakob Illeborg Pagter

I obtained a PhD degree in computer science in 2001 and have worked professionally with IT security ever since. First as a software architect at Cryptomathic and later as lecturer at Aarhus University. Since 2005, I have worked at the Alexandra Institute’s Centre for IT Security.

My work is focused on the uses of modern cryptography – especially Secure Multiparty Computation – to address security issues. As an example, I was involved in the SIMAP project that resulted in the world’s first commercial application of the technology.

Modern cryptography can also be used to solve many other IT security issues relating to for instance pervasive computing, mutual and cloud computing, and privacy. An example is the GoalRef project where we designed a unique security solution for an intelligent goal detector system used in for instance professional handball.

I am also engaged professionally in other aspects of IT Security than merely cryptography, such as security analysis and not least investigations into how IT security can act as a business catalyst within the context of pervasive computing, mutual and cloud computing, and privacy.

In my current work, I focus on:

Establishment of new projects. This includes applications for national funds and EU funds. The projects focus primarily on applied cryptography, such as Secure Multiparty Computation.

Starting up a new course on cloud security, which prepares the participants for obtaining Cloud Security Alliance’s new CCSK certification. Read more at alexandra.dk/ccsk.

Implementation of Secure Multiparty Computation and Attribute-Based Credentials, and how to deploy these technologies. The latter especially in the ABC4Trust project.

I am on the programme committee for the 25th IFIP International Information Security Conference (SEC 2011) and 37th EUROMICRO Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications (SEAA 2011).

In addition, I give talks on our activities and on IT security in general. You can down-load slides from these talks on Centre for IT Security’s blog where you can also keep yourself in the loop about our activities.

The Alexandra Institute’s Security Lab provides research, innovation and advisory services on security issues relating to technological trends such as pervasive computing, cloud computing, mutual computing and privacy.

To address these issues, we develop innovative concepts and solutions based on a number of core competences: secure multiparty computation, authentication and privacy enhancing technologies (PETs), usable security, secure communication, security architecture and business understanding.

Together with Aarhus University we are world leaders within the implementation of Secure Multiparty Computation – a special cryptographic technique that enables computation on encrypted data.

I recommend:

Nicholas Carr: The Big Switch – an excellent book that describes why Cloud Computing can revolutionise our ways of working with IT.

Ross Anderson: Security Engineering (3rd edition) – one of the most worthwhile reads on IT security.

Dixit and Nalebuff: Thinking Strategically – good, practical introduction to game theory.

- and last but not least: Centre for IT Security’s blog.
