SmartSantander

The SmartSantander project kicked off early September 2010 in Santander, Spain. The project is a Framework Programme 7 research and development project under the Future Internet Research & Experimentation (FIRE) objective and will run for the next three years. It proposes a unique city-scale experimental research facility and will focus on the deployment of an Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructure including smart city applications and services based on real world sensor information.

The facility will stimulate development of new applications by users of various types including advanced experimental research on IoT technologies and realistic assessment of users’ acceptability of IoT technology, applications and services.

The facility will comprise more than 20,000 sensors. The core of the facility will be located in the city of Santander, the capital of the region of Cantabria situated on the north coast of Spain, and its surroundings with other installation being envisioned in Guildford, Aarhus, Belgrade, Luebeck and other locations.

One of the main objectives of the project is to fuel the use of the experimental facility among the scientific community, end users and service providers in order to reduce the technical and societal barriers that prevent the IoT concept to become an everyday reality.

To attract the widest interest and demonstrate the usefulness of the SmartSantander platform, a key aspect that will be addressed, is the inclusion of a wide set of applications. Application areas will be selected based on their high potential impact on the citizens as well as to exhibit the diversity, dynamics and scale that are essential in advanced protocol and algorithmic solutions, and will be able to be evaluated through the platform.

Thus, the platform is intended to be attractive for all involved stakeholders: Industries, communities of users, other entities that are willing to use the experimental facility for deploying and assessing new services and applications as well as Future Internet researchers to validate their cutting-edge technologies (protocols, algorithms, radio interfaces, etc.).

Teknologi og metoderTechnology and methods

 

During the first year of the project, work will focus on an initial deployment of about 2,000-3,000 sensors in the city of Santander. These sensors will be used in an initial set of applications and services.

In subsequent years this initial deployment will be extended to exceed 20,000 sensors and innovative smart city applications and services. Several open calls for experimental contributions will be posted to the research community to use this unique facility in their research efforts.

Key functions

  1. Validation of approaches to the architectural model of the IoT.
  2. Evaluation of the key building blocks of the IoT architecture, in particular, IoT interaction & management protocols and mechanisms; device technologies; and key support services such as discovery, identity management and security.
  3. Evaluation of social acceptance of IoT technologies and services.
